INTERVIEW ABOUT CASTING AGENTS What's the journey to getting a casting agent?
After someone has finished their idea for a production, they (usually personally) contact the casting agents. These people are called clients. If an actor/actress is lucky enough to have an agent, the agent contacts the casting agents. The casting agent then comes and sees whether the actor/actress looks, sounds and acts well enough to fit the part that he/she needs to play. Is it any different for theatre?
In theatre, most companies own casting agents themselves. How easy is it to get a casting agent in Melbourne?
Not very. There are only about 15 relatively big casting agencies in Melbourne. Many casting agencies are also quite specific in what they deal with. How do you get qualifications as a casting agent?
Casting agents come from lost of different paths. Some have been actors, others have been directors for a while or it could be someone who's studied Media Studies/Film. It's pretty much anyone with a history in performing arts/productions. But it's mostly the same kind of employment as actors. As long as a casting agent can decide who is good for a role and who isn't quickly, that's all that's needed. What are casting agents like?
Casting agents are generally quite nice. They pretty much have a job where they need to be good at stereotypes. When people watch theatre or film, they see characters which are stereotypical and probably reflect their idea of a stereotypical person like them. That's the job of the casting agent. To some people, actors/actresses are seen as paid for doing nothing. Do you think that casting agents are looked upon the same way?
I honestly don't know, but there are some times where actors and actresses aren't paid well because they can't get any jobs. Many actors and actresses have a second, fallback kind of job if they don't make heaps of money from acting. Casting agents certainly get a lot more money that actors/actresses, even though (I think) actors and actresses do a much harder job!
